About Children in Crisis
WHO ARE CHILDREN IN CRISIS
Established in 1993, Children in Crisis' vision is of a world where all
children have access to education to enable them to fulfil their
potential - to live positive, healthy lives and contribute to the
development of the societies in which they live.
OUR FOCUS ON EDUCATION
Our view is that education, in every sense, is the single most important
development tool and our commitment and our passion is to help
communities provide it for every child.
Worldwide, a staggering 77 million children are still denied an
education, of which 39 million are from countries affect by war. A
chance to get an education provides these children with a chance to
build a better future. It also offers a much needed sense of security,
and a daily routine for children whose lives have been traumatised by
war.
The simple fact is that until every child has the opportunity to attend
a school equipped with the essential educational materials and be taught
by teachers trained for the task, there is little possibility of
alleviating poverty. Children in Crisis takes the view that every school
built or rehabilitated, every teacher trained is a contribution to a
process that, while lengthy, will ultimately enable the citizens of
impoverished nations to reclaim their rights.
OUR PROJECTS
Children in Crisis works with local communities in seven of the world's
poorest countries to meet the needs of children in the most effective
way.
In Africa and Asia we support local organisations to develop education
programmes which meet the needs of children and their communities
through training teachers, supporting classes for out-of-school
children, training in basic health messages and building and equipping
schools.
In Europe, there is a need for drugs education, particularly for
children living in societies in which drug and alcohol misuse is common.
We work with these children to ensure that they have the information and
skills needed to make positive, informed decisions about their own
lives.
Our history
Children in Crisis was founded by the Duchess of York in 1993 to address
the needs of "forgotten children", some of the most vulnerable and
disadvantaged children in the world - out of the media spotlight and out
of people's thoughts.
Since then, Children in Crisis has expanded its programmes with the
"education for children in conflict" projects in Sierra Leone,
Afghanistan and East Timor; the street children projects in Russia and
Ecuador; drugs and alcohol awareness programmes in the UK and Ukraine
and healthcare and education projects in the far west of China.
