Update 02.03.2011

From St Quentin to Calais, we made it and from there the tunnel crossing went smoothly. We arrived in the UK at 2pm and got home at 6pm. 2367kms travelled in 5days across 12 countries! What an adventure - what a great cause! thank you for supporting us on the Classic Car Continental Challenge for Comic Relief!

Update 01.03.2011 
It is day four already - I can't believe it!! We are starting to find it difficult to distinguish the days apart from one another as they seem to be going so quickly! We started in Basel in Switzerland this morning and set off at 8.30am; heading straight to the petrol pumps to stock up for the day ahead. As has become the norm, the Zastava was the centre of attention for passers by whilst the attendant filled us up. We drove to Strassborg via the German towns of Freiburg Im Breisgau and Offenburg and then continued straight into Luxembourg from the south. No border controls now we are in western Europe - just depots that we drive straight through! The roads we started out on today were quite testing for the little Zastava - 75km/h with huge cargo lorries right up close to the bumper was a bit too much when travelling for long periods of time - so we opted for a few of the minor roads over the big autobahns where possible. From Luxembourg we flew right on in to Belgium and from here we headed to the long undulating roads of France. We have stopped for the night in Saint-Quentin and you'll be pleased to know we've enjoyed a typically french meal... a Chinese!
 
Tomorrow we will be heading for Calais - day five!

Update 28.02.2011

After spending the night in Lienz, Austria, we woke to snow falling and a think blanket of it covering everything in sight! Not really what we wanted for our journey across the Alps... but I suppose it comes with the territory at this time of year!! We warmed up the Zastava and set off slowly and carefully west into Italy. No border control, so we just drove on through. The spray from the lorries was a bit much at times for or little wipers but we made it. From Italy we travelled North back into Austria to Innsbruck via the Brenner pass - the snow had stopped luckily for this part and driving conditions were good. Liechtenstein was the next destination and we arrived at the border to be inspected by the police yet again... These officials seem to enjoy letting every other car through except us! Oh well - it keeps us on our toes! They took their time to inspect our passports and finally let us through. A quick stop in Liechtenstein for a snack and toilet stop and then we headed straight for Switzerland. We made it to Zurich on the Autobahn and headed for Basel. Unfortunately we were stopped by the Police whilst driving and so had to pull on to the hard shoulder... They were keen to know what speed we thought we were going. So we told them - 70km/h. This apparently was the wrong answer. And we were quickly informed that we were breaking the law... by driving too slowly! For your information, motorists must drive at a minimum speed of 80Km/h in Switzerland!! the policeman than asked... Does you car go that fast!? We assured assured him it was possible!
 
The Zastava then had a tricky last hour of driving for the day as it endured high speed motoring but nevertheless she didn't falter and got us to Basel, where we have checked in to a YMCA for the night.
 
Tomorrow we are off via Strasbourg and beyond - wish us luck.

Update 27.02.2011:
Well what a day! As those of you who have been following us on facebook will know, we've had a unbelievable journey today. We started in Banja Luka in Bosnia and travelled north to Zagreb in Croatia. From there we continued to Ljubljana in Slovenia and have ended up on Lienz in Austria! 4 countries,  +500Km, 10hours of driving, lots of border crossings, and a few hairy moments with the passport and car document checks and we've completed our second day of the Bosnia to Britain Classic Car Continental Challenge.
 
The weather has been kind to us - dry and dull with the highest temperature being -0.5 outside and +26 inside the car - positively tropical! We hope the dry weather will be similar for tomorrow's journey especially... It's the Alps for day3 - wish us luck!!

The Challenge:

 On 26th February 2011, father and daughter duo, Adam and Hannah Vernon, will embark on the journey of a lifetime - the Classic Car Continental Challenge from Bosnia to Britain - in aid of Red Nose Day and Comic Relief.

Over the course of their journey they estimate to travel 2400 Kilometres (1500 miles approx) in a classic 1979 Zastava 750SC – a feat that has never before been attempted (as far as we know!) With your help they aim to raise a total of £2400 - the equivalent of £1 per km.

 

The great adventure will begin in Sarajevo where Adam has been working for the last year on a European project introducing entrepreneurial learning into schools to raise the entrepreneurial spirit in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Hannah, his daughter who is a PR consultant in the UK will fly out to Sarajevo to be the navigator and co-pilot on this epic pan-European road trip travelling through 12 countries. The journey will be slow and steady with the intention of entering as many European countries whilst drawing a straight-ish line across the map and hopefully collecting a national flag from each country on route.

  

 

The Car:

 Adam first saw a Zastava in March 2009 in Sarajevo (although he didn’t know what it was at the time) and set his heart on getting one. Returning to Sarajevo in 2010 Adam’s search began and after months of hunting and numerous disappointing viewings, he managed to get this splendid blue Zastava 750SC model. He is convinced it is the best car in Bosnia and Herzegovina and is very proud of it. On completion of his work contract he is now bringing it back to the UK on this pan-European fund raising tour.

 

For those who might be interested the Zastava was produced from October 18^th 1955 to November 18^th 1985 in Yugoslavia. The fića (nickname - pronounced feecher) started life as the Fiat 600, designed by the legendary Fiat engineer Dr. Dante Giacosa. He was hypnotized by the Vespa motor scooter created by the helicopter designer D'Ascanio. He was convinced that what the Italians wanted was a four-wheeled Vespa. Within just ten months, Giacosa had created the first monovolume car ever produced. A uni-body chassis saved weight; a rear-mounted engine saved energy in getting power to the rear wheels.

In most variants barely capable of 60 mph, the robust little car was nevertheless perfect for commuting, and mobilized generations like few cars in history. So at a modest top speed Hannah and Adam are going to take it easy on their journey which they are planning to complete within a week.
