Latest news: The construction has now started and the project should take six months to complete.
Thanks to Nighat and friends for raising CHF 520 just before Christmas, to Nicole, Dave, Josie & Gina for a second fantastic donation, Liesl and Nigel (who registered 2 mins before the deadline) for cycling the CycloTour du Leman last year, helping to raise funds for the well. Well done!
Thanks too to all those of you who bought toys in our toy sale.
We sponsor a child in Lower Assock, Cameroon, through the charity "Plan UK". With Plan's help I went to visit him in 2010 with my father and my two oldest sons, Jack (16) and Luke (15).
Our sponsored child's community has 325 inhabitants but around ten children in the community die each year from water related illnesses. Children we met. We left Lower Assock determined to try to help more and, in particular, help Plan work with the villagers to build a well, providing safe and clean water to 70 children, 45 households and more than 100 adults.
The work will be supervised and supported by Plan with the villagers, including women and children, taking a leading role. The villagers themselves have pledged a contribution of 10% of the total construction costs - a considerable sum for them, given that they are never certain what their next meal will be or when they will have it. But this is part of Plan's approach to ensure that the villagers will be committed to caring for and maintaining the well long-term.
It's a "drop in the ocean" but will definitely save children's lives. So, if you can, please would you make a donation so they can build their well as soon as possible? All donations will be very gratefully received no matter how much.
We hope to return after the well has been finished, with Sam (10) as well, to see it working. All the boys are helping in different ways and have contributed over £200 to the fund so far.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity who will ensure our well is built and, if you are a UK taxpayer, they will make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation. Of course, if you are not a UK taxpayer, you can still donate! So it’s the most efficient way to donate - we raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
