My story

Hi, my name is Clifford Bowers and my family has suffered with this terrible incurable disease for as long as i can remember,it has effected many members of my family including all of my 5 brothers and sisters 2 of which are still suffering today, all money raised will go towards the search for a cure for Huntingtons Disease. On the 26th of April 2009 I am running the London marathon in memory of my mother who i lost to Huntington's disease in 1994,  of my two brothers and my sister who died age 30, 31 and 48, also in recognition of the courage shown by my brother Ted, my sister Carol, my wonderful family and all other sufferers and their families.

Huntington's disease is a rare hereditary neurological disorder. It damages the nerve cells in the brain and causes degeneration, deterioration and gradual loss of function of areas of the brain. This affects movement, cognition (perception, awareness, thinking, judgement) and behaviour, eventually leading the sufferer to be completely dependant on others. Each person whose parent has Huntington's disease is born with a 50-50 chance of inheriting the faulty gene. Anyone who inherits the faulty gene will, at some stage, develop the disease. A genetic test is available from Regional Genetic Clinics throughout the country. This test will usually be able to show whether someone has inherited the faulty gene, but it will not indicate the age at which they will develop the disease.THERE IS NO CURE.
