About The Clive Project

Dementia is not only an illness of old age. It can affect people in their thirties, forties and fifties too. Dementia impairs memory, personality, communication, behaviour and personality and for someone with family, employment and financial responsibilities, life may be come very difficult indeed.

The Clive Project provides specialist, age-appropriate support in direct response to the particular needs of the person. Strong partnerships build between the person and their support worker, confidence increases and the person can participate in activities of their choice with enjoyment and relish.

There are relaxed occasions to link up socially with other people with early onset dementia, and their families and friends. And opportunities too for those caring to share their experiences and offer mutual support.

Our history

The Clive Project is named in tribute to Clive Beaumont. An Oxford graduate and army major, Clive developed dementia in his early forties. His wife and two very young children struggled to cope without services that were appropriate for a fit and energetic man who also had dementia. It was Clive and Helen’s experience that initiated The Clive Project.

1996 saw the initial research into needs and location of younger people with dementia funded by the Alzheimer’s Society. The results led to the setting up of a specialist one-to-one service using trained support workers in 1998, working within a local charity. This service has been expanding ever since.

Families too needed support, information, advice and social outlets. The establishment of The Clive Project as the first charity for early onset dementia in 2001 enabled other carer services to be developed.
