Thank you for visiting the Colin Charlesworth Tribute Fund for Myeloma
My parents, Colin and Barbara, were truly remarkable people. Married for 47 years, they had a happy life together and were parted only when Mum died of Leukaemia last May (www.justgiving.com/barbaracharlesworth). The family was at the heart of their lives.
Born in 1928, to Frank and Bertha Charlesworth in Sheffield, Dad was a generous and kind man. He would often go out of his way to help people – be there when people needed help, to give a personal word of encouragement and to take on responsibility for caring for others.
Dad had a quite outstanding career which began at the age of 14 when he joined the General Post Office as a telegraph messenger. He completed two years national service at Catterick Garrison, York and Lancaster Regiment achieving the rank of Sergeant and was later recalled as an Army Instructor. Dad then returned to the Post Office and during his long career of 46 years was made the youngest ever Head Postmaster in Huddersfield. He then moved to York and finally was promoted to District Head Postmaster, Bradford in 1980 - the first mechanised sorting office. Dad was privileged to invite and spend the day with Prince Charles at the opening ceremony. Dad commented that his Royal Highness impressed Dad with his knowledge of the progress made in the mechanisation of the Post Office.
In the community Dad was a big organiser of social and charitable events. At Church he organised concerts inviting well known celebrities and young international performers. A member of Rotary International, he was President twice and was made a Paul Harris Fellow for service to the community. Dad was also President twice of the Royal Society of St. George. He was always to be found organising or taking part in fundraising charity events or organising weekends away for members and friends in the Lake District.
Dad was diagnosed with Myeloma two years ago. Despite immeasurable suffering he never complained and would always find a smile or joke for those fortunate enough to know him. On behalf of my Dad I would like to thank all the doctors, nurses, care workers, family and friends who helped my Dad through his illness.
