My story

Connie was born on 20 September 1918 in Streatham and died on Sunday 21st October 2007 at her home which she and Frank built in Worcester Park in 1952.  Though her family was not around her she was not alone.  She died quietly, in mid conversation with a much liked carer about lunch.  All in all it wasn't a bad way to go despite the awful period she spent in hospital since the early part of May 2007.

Adding insult to injury she suffered from a hospital acquired infection Clostridium Difficile - a revolting and debilitating gastric superbug - which added to her discomfort from Crohn's disease.  She nearly did not survive the infection.

After many weeks of medical inpatient care, she recovered, something which amazed her medical team, only to be readmitted with increasing heart failure 10 days or so after her release from hospital, again to Epsom General Hospital, was discharged on the Tuesday before she died, only to be sent by emergency ambulance to Moorfields Eye Hospital on the Friday with a suspected detached retina.  She and I got her home on Saturday morning at 3am - I don't think she'd arrived home with the milk ever before in her life!

She was a battler.  We spoke on Saturday, and again on Sunday morning.  There was nothing untoward on the Sunday - we even had a half decent argument!  Life was as normal as one can expect it to be for an 89 year old woman rendered frail by Clostridium Difficile.

Her funeral was on Friday 2nd November, at noon, at the North East Surrey Crematorium, with a gathering afterwards at her home which ended with a tremendous volley of fireworks after it got dark.  Death is a mixture of grief and a celebration of the life just ended.

The party for friends and family afterwards was just as it should have been.  Light, happy, fun, and tinges of sadness as we remembered that we would not see Connie again.  And yet that somehow didn't actually matter. She'd have approved.   She'd have approved a lot.

For many years she supported the UK Charity NACC.  We feel that her death should benefit the living and that flowers benefit no-one except the florist, so we would welcome donations, large or small, to the NACC

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to donate: The National Association for Colitis and Crohn's Disease - NACC will receive your money electronically and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in Gift Aid will be added to your donation at no cost to you.

Please donate generously.

Many thanks for your support.
