Our personal message:

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. Please dig deep and sponsor me online.

Many of you will be wondering why Paul and I have decided to run a Marathon when we are clearly to old / unfit to do so. Quite simply the work of CLIC Sargent came to our attention when some close friends of ours lost their son, Connor, to cancer. The support that CLIC Sargent provides to families and children suffering from cancer is clearly summarised in the message below, written by Connor's mother.

"In February 2006, our son Connor was diagnosed with an aggressive malignant brain tumour, he was 8 yrs old.  He was incredibly brave undergoing surgery, radiotherapy & chemo, all of which he soldiered through without complaining.

At the beginning when you receive a diagnosis like this you just feel numb with shock, you look at the MRI scans confirming the worst in disbelief as it’s hard to register the reality of what has happened to your once healthy child.  Early on during radiotherapy a Clic councillor took me to one side to ask how we were coping … I still have her card.

Countless needles are involved during treatment and Connor developed a needle phobia which with the help of play/nursing specialists he managed to ‘sort of’ overcome – he still hated canulars but with distraction we usually got by.  We have had incredible support from friends and family that helped us keep strong.  Sadly Connor lost his fight in May 2007 shortly after completing treatment – they had always told us his cancer was aggressive.

This treatment is not for the faint hearted, children like Connor, and their families have to be brave on a day-to-day basis there is no quick fix.  Clic Sargent provides direct help and a voice for these children and their families."
