Male Voice Choirs in Wales get plenty of attention, opportunities and funding, but did you know the women can also pack a mean musical punch??

After being spotted in an online video, Affinity Female Voice Choir, based in Cardiff, is the first EVER Welsh choir to be invited to participate in a Total Vocal concert in Carnegie Hall!! The concert is produced by Distinguished Concerts International New York and Dr Jonathan Griffith, Artistic Director and Principal Conductor said:

“Affinity received this invitation because of the quality and high level of musicianship demonstrated by the singers. It is quite an honour just to be invited to perform in New York. These wonderful musicians not only represent a high quality of music and education, but they also become ambassadors for the entire community."

Affinity is a very special choir and I'm delighted to be their founder and M.D. They sing to a very high standard, and their commitment, enthusiasm and dedication radiates at every performance. This invitation is recognition of all we've worked to achieve and I couldn't be more proud of the choir."

Having always been a community choir, accessible to all women over the age of 18, we see this as an amazing opportunity to showcase the talent and culture of choirs in Wales, on the international stage. The opportunity also involves a two-day residency with Deke Sharon (Musical Director for the Pitch Perfect movies) and the skills and experience learned there will easily be transferred to workshops, schools and rehearsals on our return to Wales.

This is a fabulous opportunity for Cardiff, Wales and Great Britain to be represented in New York City - we are delighted to accept the honour of this invitation but we need your help. All donations will go directly to funding this opportunity by paying the concert participation fee for our members and helping as many of the Affinity ladies as possible get to Carnegie Hall. We are grateful for your support in promoting grassroots music and putting female Welsh choirs on the map!

Time is marching on and it won’t be long until we cross over the pond on our adventure. We have 31 members of going, plus myself as MD, and we are all paying nearly the entire cost by ourselves as funding streams don’t pay for participation in international events. . Our final push on fundraising is to help us pay for the last few things we need, eg our transfers into Manhattan from the airport, and we’ve still got a way to go to cover the hotel bill. We’re working hard on being the best choir we can to represent Wales and female choirs. D x
