    Story

Hi and thank you for taking the time to look at my page. I am desperately hoping to be able to raise enough money to buy my husband, Mark Shaw, a pioneering electric wheelchair. He was hit by a car in 2011 and crushed under his motorbike, underneath the car. He now suffers from severe nerve damage, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome and chronic pain syndrome to name but a few of his problems. The drivers split second bad decision has had a profound life changing affect upon my husband and in turn upon our whole family. He is stuck, he can't feel the floor beneath his feet and needs a wheelchair, but has too much pain in his arms to push a manual wheelchair more than a few metres. I bought him a scooter to accommodate his height but this neither fits in a car or in shops, restaurants, pubs, etc etc. And so he is trapped, limited and lacking any independence of any sort. The last 7 years he has had to watch the world and life pass him by. We have recently discovered a UK company that can supply an electric chair called a GOING. It is manoevered by using the core muscles e.g. lean forward to go forward and backward to reverse. Tilting the bar steers the chair. This is revolutionary in our eyes as Mark suffers with chronic arthritis in his wrists which have made self propelling a standard wheelchair almost impossible. Unlike the bulky electric wheelchairs this can easily be transported in a normal car with great ease. This will never take away the pain my husband suffers from day and night without respite, however it will give him a fighting chance of being a part of his childrens lives, making him feel as though he is part of society and not trapped away from the world and all that it has to offer. An accident that was not his fault has consumed his thirties. If the saying that life begins at forty has any merit, then I want to try and open up the world and make him feel a part of it and give him a means of independence and hope for the future.

Previously we could only source this design of chair in New Zealand at a much higher cost (not including shipping). Fortunately, thanks to a company in the UK called '2020 Mobility', we are now able to achieve our goal at a much lower cost.

Thanks again to all you very kind people helping us achieve our goal. Mark and I are overwhelmed by the response from everybody and can't thank you all enough. We have now been able to source a similar chair for Mark in the UK. This greatly reduces costs due to shipping and customs etc hence our new target of £15,500.
