    Story

    ALYSA Shirley NEEDS our HELP

Alysa, a single mum to 4 kids and a North London ‘Centre Force’, had her world crushed recently when her eldest son Cameron was punched JUST 3 TIMES and he’s now brain damaged…..

Who is Alysa? She’s our friend and colleague, with relentless energy, a commendable community supporter: voluntarily over 10 years was a beaver scout leader in 221st in Hornsey (primarily Campsbourne kids) cub leader at 8th Muswell Hill (children mainly from Our Lady Of Muswell, Fortismere & Tetherdown schools), progressing to Group Scout Leader, overseeing all the leaders in all sections. She was also Assistant District Commissioner (ADC) to cubs in North London, for 11 of those years Alysa was also on the fund raising committee for Campsbourne HSA & Chairperson for 3 years AND was landlady at The Hornsey Tavern for 15 years. All this at the same time as raising four children. Cameron attended Campsbourne School and later Heartlands until they relocated to the Isle of Wight where Alysa became the ADC for East Wight Scouts District for cubs.

For these 15 years Alysa lived and breathed life into our local community wholeheartedly and unconditionally, many of you will know her personally or know that she has positively effected your children’s lives through school / cubs / scouts / or a few pints down the pub so now. We people are her extended family - what better way for us to return the favour than supporting her and Cameron in their time of need?

What happened? On December 13th in the early hours having received several catastrophic blows to the head Cameron was taken to A&E on the Isle of Wight. Preliminary assessments established they were not equipped to deal with such trauma so was airlifted to Southampton where emergency surgery was carried out, he was placed in a medically induced coma in order to try and save his life. In the run up to Christmas and over the whole festive period while we enjoyed the coming together of families and friends Alysa was away from home, living at the hospital with her other 3 children fractured over the country having to stay with various friends.

Alysa waited, and prayed for weeks. She couldn’t spend Christmas with her other children, no new year celebrations, she missed her other sons birthday and had to give away the family dog. 3 weeks on he woke for the first time.

Rehab and Recovery: 4 weeks on he has been moved to Portsmouth, is still having seizures, and a whole host of other problems including: an area of Ischaemia where the swelling compressed the main artery reducing oxygen flow and cells are dying. This has effected optic nerves and movement. He has evidence of a 3rd nerve palsy and elasticity in his right arm. Cameron has minimal consciousness with no ability to communicate. Bedridden, immobile, swollen and bruised he is likely to be in hospital for at least a year.

The team of staff will continue to monitor his responsiveness, assess his needs to establish the best way forward for him whether rehab or long term care.

The future is a complete unknown, his progress slow but there have been some small positive glimpses, occasionally half opening an eye or a slight squeeze of a hand so one thing we can all cling on to is HOPE!

    How can you help?

Please donate as much as you can to help support Alysa through this tragic life changing event. The total amount of money we are aiming to raise is based on a years worth of: travel from I.o.W and the mainland daily, twice weekly overnight accommodation on the mainland, occasional childcare when no-one is able to help.

Alysa is not able to claim any kind of benefit while he is still in hospital. This is where we can help her and her family. Life goes on, work doesn’t stop, kids still need to be taken to school and its vital Alysa is by Cameron’s side encouraging him to continue to fight for his life, Alysa has to juggle all of this and there is no magic pot of money to enable it, however our fund raising can help ease that split of life between all of these.

There are other ways you might be able to help…..its a long shot but Alysa has a massive network of people she knows from all her charity work so you, someone you know or someone that knows someone could help with:

-knowledge of charity set ups and running it advice (when she has the energy she wants to set up a charity as a result of all this - more details to follow as & when)

    -ad-hoc accommodation in Portsmouth

-physio / rehab specialist willing to give extra support to him (as & when he might need it later down the line)

-rail ticket discounts from I.o.W to Portsmouth (Wightlink have already given her free travel on the ‘fast cat’ and discounted on the ferry - indefinitely)

-support her or get in touch to help on Facebook: Alysa Shirley

As a friend its incredibly difficult to watch her go through such intense pain but as a fellow parent I cannot even being to imagine the immense despair, heartache and loneliness Alysa must have felt and is still feeling. What I do know is the one thing that has kept her going throughout this has been the support from her friends 24/7….

Thank you in advance for your kind and generous consideration, I know what an amazing community you can be so please help in any way you can.

Having known Alysa for 7 years and share the same passion for community support as her, I wanted to be a local North London voice to share her story and turn the table to help her for a change.
