Story
On 7th October 2018 I will be running the Bournemouth Marathon! This will be my first ever marathon, & to say I am a little nervous about it would be an understatement! However, the reason why I am running the marathon will keep me going & get me through no matter how tough it gets! Plus I know grandad will be up there cheering me on every step of the way!
Why I am running:
In June 2017 our beloved Grandad, Ray suffered a stroke which required hospital treatment at the LRI Stroke ward. Sadly owing to the severity of the stroke we were made aware that there was a high chance that Grandad would not survive & were advised to prepare for an end of life pathway.
We were all devastated to hear this news & wanted to ensure that grandad was both comfortable & could be in a place where his last few days could be spent peacefully & with dignity.
However, through no fault of staff on a busy NHS stroke ward we found the organising, available information & practical aspects of arranging for palliative care for Grandad to meet these aims at such a short & sudden notice both confusing & limited. The option of accessing a hospice or community palliative care was unavailable to us owing to Grandad's condition & this meant Grandad & his family were on the stroke ward for 4 days of what could have been specialist palliative care.
As a family we are grateful to the many staff who cared for Grandad, however, despite the kindness of the staff who were also having to attend to many other competing demands on such a busy ward, Grandad's last few days were sadly spent in a tired & sometimes noisy clinical side room, far from ideal for palliative care.
Therefore, both in memory of Grandad & as thanks to the wonderful NHS staff who cared for him, we would like to raise funds to donate to the LRI Stroke ward to specifically help support future patients & families who require palliative care & are too ill or close to end of life to be moved to a more specialist palliative environment.

6 years agoI'm a bit behind in posting this, but......... The marathon was hard, & way, way hillier than I'd ever anticipated & very painful! But, I enjoyed it in a weird way! It was a great sense of achievement & running it for a cause so close to my heart kept me going every time I thought ' I can't do this'. It was also extra special as I got to run with my mum (who a week after running this completed the Leicester half too!) I just wanted to say thank you all SO MUCH for your support and sponsorship, it really means a lot. X
