Beckie was diagnosed with a genetic heart condition last year after an episode we would rather not re-live, at home, after being misdiagnosed 15 years ago with epilepsy. Beckie has Long QT Syndrome – a form of arrhythmia caused by an electrical disturbance in the heart, where some symptoms can be similar; fainting, dizzy spells and seizures. These symptoms are caused when the heart beats irregularly with insufficient oxygen to the brain. It can cause a sudden cardiac arrest, and a defibrillator is required to restart the heart. These symptoms can start unexpectedly and may be triggered by: stress, a sudden noise – such as an alarm, shock, strenuous exercise, or a slow heart rate during sleep.

As it is a genetic condition, our children were tested. Our daughter, Mia, 7, has been diagnosed with Long QT too.

For some encouragement, Beckie has given up Chocolate for March and April, Ben has given up Beer for March and April, and Mia and Sam have given up chocolate for March!
