    Story

Hiya! My name’s Blessing and I really need your help and would be very grateful if you could help. As you may or not know, I will be heading out to Honduras this summer with Global Human Rights Brigades, to help in the provision of legal aid in the Honduran community.

This brigade tangibly helps to empower vulnerable communities to resolve their legal challenges that threaten their families, their land and environment. The general focus of our work will be for women in remote, rural, and under resourced communities who would otherwise have limited to no access to legal resources. As a volunteer I will be assisting Honduran attorneys who will be offering legal advice in a clinic-style environment. More so, I will be helping to deliver education workshops that will provide legal education to members of the community, making them aware of their human rights. We do not just aim to raise money for the community, but actually go there first hand and teach them how to use their tools first hand, so that they can self-sustain their own development.

The money raised for this cause will be injected into the community, but how? Firstly, a proportion of the money will go towards buying the materials needed to facilitate the legal education classes (e.g. posters, paper, pens) as well as towards the printing of the legal documents that we may consult. Additionally, everyone who we will be working with will be Honduran locals, and the reason for this is to ensure that money is being injected into these communities so that they can afford to fund their legal processes. This is something that currently most of them can’t afford, for example many couples are not legally married because a marriage certificate costs more than the average salary. This has led to many property related disputes when a couple is trying to get a divorce, as their marriage was never legally registered. This sort of circumstances are ones that Global Brigades are trying to combat.
