In 2006 Emma Birkett, a local mum was struggling to find somewhere suitable to take her daughter Ellie to play within the Bury area. Finding places to take children who have various complex learning difficulties to play has always been a problem. Emma got together with a group of parents and carers with disabled children from the Bury area , who were also struggling to find somewhere to take their children with various care needs. The lack of play facilities inspired Emma and the parents to create their own special place and "Boomerang" the Charity was formed. The parents aim was to provide all these specail children with their own unique sensory Centre. The Centre would give Ellie and all other children with any need or requirement a safe, stimulating play environment where they could grow and develop.
After 5 years of fundraising Boomerang finally opened in 2011 and since then we have helped children from all over the North West and provided much needed facilities for children from special schools, special needs play schemes, respite centres, portage, community groups, family support groups, hospices and carers and parents of children with special needs as well as being privately booked by adults with disabilities. The children who visit our centre have a wide range of needs. A significant number have complex needs, medical needs, mobility needs, learning disabilities, others have terminal illnesses. For these children and their families/carers life can be very difficult, facing daily challenges with a lack of support and limited social opportunities that cater for their needs.
Boomerang believes that all children should be able to access a play opportunity in a calm, safe non-threatening environment that caters for their needs regardless of their abilities or disabilities. There is no other place like this, Boomerang offers hundreds of disabled people in the North West a place to go and have fun and relax in a safe stimulating environment.
We hope that you can find some way of helping us and the families that use our centre.
