    Story

I'm am disabled & A tenant of Birmingham City council. They have left me in deplorable living conditions since 30th of September 2008, when I moved into this property. When they let me this property, it was not fit for someone to live in & they promised me that if I accepted the tenancy, they would complete all of the disrepair in the property within a reasonable amount of time & despite numerous request & letters to my previous housing officer, they failed to do so. Due to the previous tenant, West Midlands Police had to break into the property. I had a gaping hole in the door were the police kicked it in & 2 pieces of ply wood nailed to both sides of the door holding it together. Birmingham City Council assured me that a new UPVc door was on order & would be fitted within 2 weeks. They left me in this flat for 14 months with my front door like that one push and anyone could gain entry into my home & it was only when I threatened legal action, that they came & replaced the door.

They left me in this property for two winters with a gaping hole in my kitchen window with a piece of plastic covering the hole in the glass and I couldn't open the half of the window, as it would fall out of the frame, as the whole window was rotten & it was nearly 2 years before they came to replaced the window, also they left me with one of the UPVc double glaze units smashed in the lounge window, where the previous tenant had smashed it trying to climb through the window when she locked herself out.

They left gaping holes in the walls where they had run the central heating pipes, because the previous tenant refused to let them back in to finish the installation of the central heating & left me for nearly 2 & a half years with no hot water & 4 years with no heat in my bedroom, so I had to sleep on the sofa in my living room for 4 years, which has now permanently damaged my back & as now left me disabled & I have been diagnosed with Degenerative Disc Disease in my spine cause by me sleeping on a sofa for that length of time & I now need a wheelchair.

There is very little storage in the kitchen & what is there, I cannot use due to the unbearable pain in my back. There is absolutely no worktop space to cook, cut vegetable, or prepare a healthy meal. Occupational Therapy will not adapt the kitchen, as I am not yet in a wheelchair & The Housing Department have said that they will not do it, as the property dose not meet my housing need, so I am left here without the ability to have at least one proper cooked meal a day.

In 2014 the City Councils Independent Living Team (now known as The Disabled Grants Access Team) converted the bathroom into a wet room, but the builder didn't install the floor properly & when you use it, it floods the completed flat & as now caused major damp & mould in the hallway & Bedroom. I have a great big fruiting body fungus growing in the corner of the wet room caused by it not being installed properly & I was asked by the Housing Department not to use the wet room to allow the property to dry out, so since 2015, I have had absolutely no bathing facilities in my home.

I took Birmingham City Council to Court in February, 2016 due to the disrepair in the property & on the 9th of May, 2016 I was supposed to have moved into temporary accommodation to allow the City Council to redo the Wet Room & abate the rest of the disrepair in the property, but this was cancelled as the councils legal department failed to arrange the temporary accommodation by Friday the 6th of May, 2016.

Since that date, the city council have done absolutely nothing, I have repeatedly spoken to the disabled grants access team over the last 2 years and have been repeatedly fobbed of with start dates that never materialise & now the Housing Department have said that this property no longer meets my housing need, as it cannot be adapted for a wheelchair & I need to be rehoused, but they will not help with the cost of rehousing me. I haven't been able to work for the last 5 years because of the disabilities that I now have, that they have caused.
