    Story

Briarwood school is a special school for pupils aged from 3 to 19. We are spread across 3 sites; We have 140 pupils across the age range. At Briarwood we support pupils with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD), including those with life-limiting conditions, Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), Autism (ASD) and children with Complex Needs. and Physical disabilities.

Many pupils come from the East central area of Bristol though some children come from other areas in the city; our pupils have a diverse mix of nationalities and languages. Due to the complex nature of the pupils that attend Briarwood, it is our responsibility to provide them with the most appropriate curriculum and enrichment experiences, a tailored approach, to both academic learning, life skills and Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education.

We are raising money in the hope of being able to house our new chicks that hatched here earlier this month. The chicks are very important to us at Briarwood and in the few weeks they have been with us they have had a significant therapeutic impact on our students (and staff!).

After the pupils named the chicks (Glenda, Dave and Millie) and formed such positive attachments we decided that we could not send them away, to their unknown fate! 5 male chicks have gone to live with one of our staff members on their beautiful allotment and the 3 female chicks will be staying with us at Briarwood, if we are able to raise enough money for a coop.

The chicks are nurtured, cleaned and fed by our pupils whose learning has been enriched by this experience that we hope to continue. Since welcoming the chicks into our school we have seen an improvement in pupils communication skills, increase in confidence and emotional well-being. Please help us to provide the chicks with a lovely new home where they can be happy and well looked after by our school family.

    HUGE UPDATE!

In other, VERY exciting news... We have managed to persuade our lovely Head Teacher to allow us to have a Briarwood therapy dog! We will be keeping this page open for "doggy donations" to those who wish to support us on this journey.

Thank you for all of your support,

      Update from the Page owner

Your generosity will allow us to continue caring for the chicks and providing the pupils with an enriching experience that will support development in many ways. The chicks have been 'on tour' during the last couple of weeks, with visits to the POD, Secondary & Nexus. They are now back in Post 16, being looked after, cleaned and handled by our pupils who have been developing animal care skills. Look out for fundraising events across the school in the coming weeks. We promise to continue updating you on the chicks - photos to follow!
