The plastic in the ocean is threatening over 700 marine species, which plays a role in the rising rates of species extinction.

Another reason why plastic is in an issue in our ocean is because it is never fully biodegradable. Instead, plastics photo-degrade — that is, they break down under UV light into smaller and smaller pieces to the microscopic level. As they do, any toxic additives they contain, including flame retardants, antimicrobials, and plasticizers, will be released into the marine environment. These tiny pieces break down no further and persist unseen in the deeper layers of the marine environment indefinitely.

I have found a wonderful non-profit organisation, called 4Ocean. They pull rubbish from the ocean a pound at a time.

Let me tell you a bit about them. It all began when two guys took a surfing trip to Bali and found a massive amount of rubbish in the sea and on the beach. They asked they locals 'why is there so much rubbish, does no one clean it' the locals told them that it does get cleaned but the waves from the ocean deliver more and more rubbish each day. They noticed that fishermen where having to push their boats through the rubbish to get to the ocean to basically come back empty handed. This is when they had the idea of paying the fisherman to collect rubbish from the ocean and coastlines instead of fish. They have more than just fisherman working for them now.

Why 1 pound at a time? A fisherman weighs his fish and gets paid by the pound. So 4Ocean thought as they were changing their lifestyle from fish to plastic it made sense to pay them for each pound of plastic they bring in.

They have already removed 4,319,326 million pounds of rubbish from the ocean, but there is still a long way to go.

My mission is to raise money to pull as many pounds from the ocean as we can.
