Story
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) in Guyana
Guyana has the highest suicide rate in the world for women and the second highest rate for men (source: World Health Organisation). Three members of the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) are going to Guyana for two weeks, from the 20th April 2018, to try to make a difference. The reasons why the suicide rates are so high are multi-factorial and not fully understood. However, in conjunction with The Guyana Foundation, a mental health charity, we will be training 48 people to be able assess and treat people suffering from depression and anxiety. Our aim is that this cohort of people will create an organisation, similar to BABCP, that can then develop a service for the people of Guyana, which will expand both in knowledge and numbers. At least one of us will be going back in October to monitor their progress.
This is where you come in. we are providing our time for free and, at the moment, we are paying for our own travel expenses. If you are able to make a donation it would be gratefully appreciated. Any money raised will go to cover the costs of our travel expenses and teaching materials.
In the event that we raise enough money to cover these costs any extra money will be donated to the Guyana Foundation to further their work.

6 years agoHelp. With just under 7 weeks to go almost everything is in place and we’re good to go. Unfortunately, donations have dried up. We will still be going but, as we are well short of our target, we will have to fund most of the project from our own pockets. If you know of anyone who might wish to donate, please let them know that any contribution will be gratefully received.

6 years agoOnce again, thank you so much for your support. As you might have realised we should now be in Guyana. However, at the request of The Guyana Government, the training program has now been rescheduled and will commence on Monday 29th October 2018. If you know of anyone who wishes to donate, please let them know that any contribution will be gratefully received, as we are still well short of our target.

6 years agoThank you so much for your kind support, you've been brilliant. For a number of reasons, beyond my control, we have had to delay our trip to Guyana by 5 weeks. We are now going on the 25th May 2018. Our goals to make a difference and save lives remains unchanged.
