    Story

In March, Crofton Silver Band landed first place in the Second Section of the Yorkshire Area Brass Band Championships. This has earned us the honour leading Yorkshire’s assault on the national title at Cheltenham in September.

We are absolutely thrilled at being given the opportunity to repeat the success we enjoyed just two years ago when we won the Yorkshire Third Section title and then went on to be named National Champions.

Already we have begun making plans to take on the best 2nd section bands in Britain come the Autumn and bring the silverware back to God’s Own County. Nothing would please us more than to lift the National title for Yorkshire as we, now promoted to the 1st section, set our stall out to compete at a level we have never reached in our 143-year history.

Sadly, going to the Nationals is a very expensive business, particularly for a completely self-supporting, unsponsored band like us. Our hotel accommodation alone is likely to cost in excess of £4,000 plus the ongoing costs of our weekly rehearsals, new music and the up keep of band instruments .

Any help that you or anyone you know could give us to fly the flag for Yorkshire would be most gratefully received.

Virtually every penny we have is earned through concerts, marches and carolling. We are just a bunch of very keen amateurs who want to go on getting better and who revel in being one of the most entertaining bands around.

The band was founded in 1875 in the former mining village near Wakefield whose name we proudly bear. The band was made up almost entirely of men and boys who worked at nearby Nostell Colliery and though we took the pit’s name in the 1950s and 60s, financial support never materialised.

A healthy proportion of the band are villagers and we have strong ties with the village through school, club, church and our learners, Crofton Silver Bandits.

Please help this dedicated community band by donating to our fund to help us raise the trophy for Yorkshire in Cheltenham this September.

Crofton Silver Band will be taking to the stage at the Theatre Royal Wakefield on April 20th. Tickets are still available so why not get yours to come along and listen and support your Yorkshire Champions and see what you will be supporting.
