Stroke is the leading cause of disability in the UK and the fourth biggest killer. Patients need active support and treatment on discharge to manage their life changing, physical, mental and emotional obstacles. Southend University Hospital’s dedicated stroke unit provides acute stroke care on Benfleet ward and stroke/neuro-rehabilitation on Paglesham ward. They offer a 24-hour thrombolysing or 'clot-busting' service and are able to provide a brain scan within the first 24 hours of the stroke, dramatically increasing the chance of recovery following an attack.
