Story
It is almost impossible for an able-bodied person to imagine living with the difficulties of having complex physical disabilities.
But I ask, just for a few minutes, you imagine you have Quadriplegic cerebral palsy and this is your wheelchair.
(Although your limbs don’t function so well, your sense of humour is in perfect working order! 😉)
You laugh and joke often, but when you are at home alone you’re forced to live in fear.
You reside in a council property with only one accessible fire exit, the front door. 🚪 So in the event of a fire at the front of your house you have no means of escape. 🔥🥺
Although the property has a back door (and garden) you are unable to access it as the layout of the property does not allow your wheelchair to reach your back door. 😳😳😳😳😳😳😳 You are stuck...
😰 Therefore, unfortunately, simply installing a ramp at the current back door isn’t a viable option.
There is no sprinkler system in the property and you don’t possess physical capacity to throw yourself from your chair onto the floor, turn yourself 90 degrees, crawl to and open the back door before crawling down the steps. 😳
In reality you would be trapped. 🥺
This is our funny, fiercely independent, unique, compassionate and determined friend Dr Danielle Farrel, who lives with this fear every day.
Having already contacted the local council, Social worker, Fire Brigade and Department of Adaptations and regeneration, none of whom could offer any assistance, 🤦🏽♀️Danielle went to an architect who gave a quote of £25,000 for the modification. (See attached quotation)
🚪♿️ This comprises of an automatic door which connects her bedroom to a ramp taking her to the safety of her garden. In the event of a fire blocking her from escaping through her front door, it is her only hope.
💪🏽 Danielle prides herself on her resilience and succeeding in spite of her physical disabilities. She runs her own Community Interest Company, Y.O.U., however she is often too kind for her own good, working without recompense to ensure others receive the help they need.
This time she needs a little help.
If you can help in any way, every single penny is so greatly appreciated. 🙏
She currently spends over 40% of her life alone in the property, so making her safe would truly be a life-changing
