    Story

Friends and relatives of a man who suffered life-threatening injuries when he fell down a flight of stairs and landed on his head have been rallying to support him and his wife.
Darran Corp, 50, fell down 13 steps onto a marble floor after he missed his footing while leaving a work Christmas party at a Bath restaurant on 20th December.
His wife Nicki, who was picking him up from the party that night, arrived to find her husband lying in a pool of blood. Darran was taken to the Royal United Hospital by ambulance and then transferred to Southmead Hospital, which is the region’s major trauma centre.
Nicki, who grew up in Saltford, was initially told to prepare for the worst. Darran, whom she married in Corfu last June, had suffered a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain and underwent an emergency operation. He was then put into an induced coma for 10 days.
A self-employed dry lining contractor who until his accident was working on the Somerdale site in Keynsham, Darran has also had to battle a blood clot in his lung and a chest infection. However, the good news is that he has now come round from the coma, recognises Nicki and is able to move his limbs. He has no memory of the accident or the night out.
“Life can change in an instant,” said Nicki, who is full of praise for the medical team at Southmead for saving her husband’s life: “The nurses and doctors here are absolutely amazing.”
Nicki, who is a sales manager, says she is also grateful for the practical and emotional support from friends and family.
Her sisters Michelle Uren and Corenne Etheridge and other relatives are planning a sponsored swim at Keynsham Leisure Centre on Sunday 27th January to raise money for the Intensive Care Unit at Southmead and to help with Darran’s care and rehabilitation.
Nicki and Darran live in Temple Cloud and Nicki says that her husband, who has two grown-up children from a previous relationship, has a long road to recovery ahead of him over the coming year and need your help.
