Cirenas is a wonderful community project run by a handful of dedicated staff and visiting volunteers from many countries of the world. They go on night patrols to ensure the welfare of any of the 4 species of turtles who visit the beach to lay eggs. The newly laid eggs are taken to an enclosed area of the beach, the hatchery, where their safety from predators is ensured during the 60 days's incubation. Daily checks are undertaken and the hatchlings are safely escorted to the sea. The project educates local people about the turtles in an attempt to reduce the incidence of egg collecting and killing of adult turtles for meat. The work is essential for the survival of turtles in the area. Funds are urgently needed to ensure the future of their work.
