Story
On the 4th of September, by daughter-in-law (to be) had back pain and was sent to the Maternity Assessment Unit. She was 26 weeks pregnant with my first granddaughter, Isla.
38 hours later, Isla could not be held back any longer and was born, weighing just under 2 pounds.
Unfortunately Isla's extreme prematurity caused her to have bleeds on her brain (Strokes) and her medical team explained that the bleeds were of the worst severity, affecting both the left and right side of the brain, washing brain matter away. We also learned that Isla had cardiac problems, lung disease, anaemia (needing multiple transfusions), infections, and other problems.
It was only for the expertise of the amazing neonatal staff that Isla was able to slowly grow, and 3 and a half months later Isla was able to come home where she belonged, weighing just over 4 pounds.
If it was not for this incredible resource, the kind, professional and competent staff, and the medical equipment that was used to save Isla's life, Isla would not have survived. Isla has been given the opportunity to be the brave, courageous, intelligent, creative and kind little girl that she is today, and the least I can do is to raise money which may help other babies/families who go through this harrowing roller coaster journey in the Neonatal world.
An example of how the money could be used is: when Isla was in hospital, staff kept a diary of everything that was happening around her and to her when we were not there; this diary was funded by the staff out of their own pockets. It was one of the most precious and meaningful things. The diary was a connection to Isla and although didn't compare to being able to be with her and close to her all of the time, it really did help all of us as a family. It is now an amazing memory book of a very brave young lady's fight to be here, which shouldn't have to be funded by the hard working staff alone.
Please help me to make some rainbows in what some people may feel is endless rain. I’m taking part in the colour run at Uttoxeter Racecourse on the 14th July with tge hope of raising a little so that all of this very much needed help and support can carry on
