Rudi is 3 and was born with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1 which is a neurological genetic condition that was diagnosed at 6 months.

SMA is a degenerative complex condition which affects the muscles in his whole body requiring him to have round the clock care. SMA also affects the muscles used for breathing and initial life expectancy was 2 years of age.
In 2017 at the age of 18 months Rudi started on a drug trial of Spinraza in Paris. This is administered into his lower spine 4 times a year for the rest of his life. This has seen an increase in Rudi's muscle function and as a result Rudi has been able to use a whizzybug which is a basic power chair.

Despite all of Rudi's physical needs he is a chatty, sociable little boy who has no additional learning needs. A powered wheelchair will help Rudi access school with his peers giving him some independence from having to rely on a carer constantly.
