Weʼve raised £600 to provide a monthly home cooked meal for elderly residents of our local sheltered housing community to improve nutrition and socialisation

Funded on Sunday, 31st July 2022

    Story

Can you spare a few pounds to help fund a monthly home cooked meal for our local sheltered housing residents?

    About our cause -

We are a small group of volunteers who have set up a Dinner Club for the elderly tenants of our local sheltered housing complex

This all started when we cooked Christmas Lunch for eight elderly tenants who were alone on Xmas day 2018. From speaking with them we realised they were very keen to have a home cooked meal more frequently, so we decided to start a Dinner Club. This Christmas we have provided a Christmas Dinner for 28 residents and are also providing a meal for 12 on Christmas Day.

We did the first meal for 12 tenants in February 2019 which was a great success. We have since provided ten dinners this year and our numbers have increased month on month reaching 30 attending which, thanks to your donations, we have been able to cater for so far, but to keep going we need to keep raising funds.

We don't want to exclude anyone so we don't charge the diners and everyone invovled in making the meals happen is a volunteer. The diners make an optional donation to the Meal Makers charity, we love that they are helping others while we help them.

We are looking for donations to help with the cost of ingredients

If we make a success of this project, we plan to extend this service to other nearby sheltered housing complexes.

We are passionate about helping them access good tasty food combined with the opportunity to make new friends within the community.

We are a small group of volunteers who want to make a big impact - no matter how big or small your donation, your contribution will go towards the cost of ingredients, the more we raise the more people we can include.

The Sheltered Housing provider is not running the usual Christmas Lunch for the residents this year, so although we are providing Xmas Lunch on Xmas Day we have decided to add an extra dinner to give all the residents a chance to celebrate Xmas together. This is happening tommorrow night, 28 people are attending, if you can donate to help us cover the costs of this additional meal we would be merry grateful. We have set up a new fund raiser for this event - https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/karen-alford-1

30 diners in August, the largest dinner so far. We don't charge diners for the meals, and to accomodate the amount of ingredients and equipment we need, we more than ever rely on donations to our fund raising, so please donate if you can! In return the diners donate what they can at each dinner and they have raised over £350 for the Meal Makers charity so far this year. We are all enjoying this experience so please help us to continue.

20 diners last month and 23 this month! There has been a huge change over the last six months, many tenants have commented that everyone is much more socialable and attribute it to our monthly meals which is lovely. This month the slow roasted lamb with a red currant glaze a great hit and I made my first ever Banoffee Pie. We enjoy cooking and spending the evening with these lovely people We appreciate all the donations, the diners are making donations to the Meal Makers charity so lots of people are benefitting in many ways - us included.
