We are a newly formed society, founded by several first year film studies students at De Montfort University who are looking for donations to fund our society and shenanigans to enhance our learning and better the university experience. We aim to create it much more unique and know of no other society in the UK like our own. Therefore we are reaching out to the public to help us build our membership and fund prizes so that partakers in the debates will have incentives that will get them eager to learn and become as fanatical about film as we are!

What we do:

We meet every week, with a screening every fortnight and the following week is the debate based upon a particular topic relevant to the film that has been screened. This could for example be to do with Star Wars and the feminism within the character of Rey, along with the prospect of Disney exploiting audiences to make profit.

We have 2 'agree'/'disagree' statements and 2 teams per statement. The statements are decided via polls within our society group and the two most voted for questions go ahead in the debate. The winning teams then win prizes, which keeps them stimulated in the learning experience and wanting to come back for more.

We feel our society is crucial to our learning and knowledge of the industry and not only this, but it encourages all students, from a filmic background or not, to express opinions based on a key element in popular culture: movies. We all have opinions on them and by structuring our debates and arguments in a concise, professional and fun way, we can enhance our essay writing skills and boost self-confidence to the max! As well as giving a chance for students to come together and bond over movies of which is our deepest passion!

What we need:

In order to run the society we need funds and a portion of this comes from each student's yearly membership fee which is just £4.00. We can also do fundraisers and plans are in the works for this. However in order to be successful, gain more members and engage fully with our community, we need prizes so that our members will feel keen to express their views and have an incentive and drive and in the long run this will aid the advancement of our understanding of film as a course and industry. As well as this it will be progressive within our careers and respective fields.

The sort of prizes we are after are such things as gift vouchers for high street stores, online retailers, merchandisers, supermarkets, restaurants/cafes etc. As well as this, physical prizes from electronics to merchandise and memorabilia and gift sets, cinema tickets and experience days! Even online discount codes, literally anything that will act as an incentive to both our young and mature students across the board. Of course it doesn't have to be film related, but that would be incredible also!

You can help us by donating money via the website so that we can do the hard work ourselves and source prizes related to the screenings and debates and all of this money will go towards the running of the society! Updates will be posted so you can see how your money has been spent!
