Anyone that knows me, knows ive been a grafter my entire life. I've worked since I was 15 & often had two jobs to help buy my first house & through the renovation work. My house was an amazing achievement for me, getting on the ladder as a single person isn't easy & having to learn new skills to do it up. Amongst other things, Ive rendered, tiled, laid underfloor heating, ripped out the kitchen, moved walls & my latest achievement installed a conservatory, which now is my beautiful peaceful haven.
Two years ago I was given the opportunity to work for a small building company, as a supply chain manager. Ive been in the supply chain for 15+ years but never in construction, I jumped at the chance because I knew i loved all aspects of construction. I started with implementing a brand new supply chain for all materials & trades. I then wrote health & safety procedures for the new site. We looked to employ a site manager & it soon became apparent than people can't hide their ineffificiencies in a small company. One rubbish site manager after another effected our business so negatively, it was clear that it was hard to find any one with any substance. So after the third, I decided to step up. Im not officially the site manager because I'm not qualified but i fell into the role whilst still doing all the buying for the site. I love what I do and feel ive found my calling, its hard being a female in such a male oriented environment but I bring a different viewpoint, I like things organised & done to a high standard so we can be proud of what we build. Now to progress my career further I need to do my SMSTS course. I'm unable to get funding or get my company to pay for it so I need to fund myself. Ive never asked for anything & always work for what I have so this is new to me but I can't keep putting my life on hold hoping I'll afford it one day.I really want to progress 1.because I know I am great at what I do & 2.because I want to up the bar in the construction industry.
