    Story

I'm a 21 year old graduate, volunteering out in Kumasi, Ghana for 6 weeks. In total myself and many other volunteers will be out here, teaching children between the age of 3-16 years, through the PMGY organisation (Plan My Gap Year).

To summarise, myself and many other volunteers are currently working at the Divine International School, where over 400 students are able to attend. Each child pays 1 Ghanaian cedi a day for school fees, meaning they can attend school and have and education.

1 Ghanaian cedi, the daily cost of the school fee for a child, is the equivalent to £0.20, which you'd assume is nothing for them. However, when I arrived at the school a week ago, these classrooms were half empty because so many of them couldn't afford the fees. As a group we would love to raise money to fund their school fees for the rest of the term, to enable them to take the exams to continue their education. This can make or break their educational lives. You can see the appreciation on their faces every day, which is another incentive to achieve this goal.

AN ADDITIONAL PROJECT is to transform the school's computer room and library. As you can see from the photos, currently the computer room is empty, with around 10 tables and chair, with a white board. During the ICT lessons, there are hardly any similarities to more developed countries such as the UK, with all of the work presented on a whiteboard with a black felt tip. The room beside (the future library), has empty shelves and nowhere comfortable for the children to sit or lay down.

This project is well underway, however we have only scratched the surface so far. The money donated to this page will go towards tables, chairs, paint, books, mats, and with plenty of hard work and ambition, a printer and potentially computers and keyboards for the children to develop their ICT skills. To put into perspective, a £10 donation will enable us to paint a whole classroom. Any and all donations will contribute to making a huge difference to these children's lives. From myself and the kids of the Divine International School, Thank you❤️.
