My name is Graham Green. I am a serving Paramedic with the Nort West Ambulance Service. I am looking to start up a charitable organisation that will help people in fuel poverty to heat their homes in winter.
Many elderly people and some younger too, struggle every winter to simply heat their homes. Many elderly people die every winter because they cannot afford to heat their homes. I want to put an end to this. Firewood is becoming increasingly expensive. I plan to start a charity "Wood Bank" in the Penrith area.
People in need can apply for free firewood. The charity will be staffed by volunteers so that timber can be cut, split and distributed to the Eden valley area. Once the target of £5,000 is reached, we can register as a charity and then fund the replacement of chains and chainsaws etc.
We will approach landowners and organisations asking them to be kind enough to donate fallen trees. We will also provide woodland management in return for donation of the timber harvested.
The funds will also pay for standing costs such as fuel and servicing for equipment and rent of a suitable log store and splitting shed. Along with things like liability insurance for the volunteers.
Please give generously to this not for profit venture that is designed to help the vulnerable and needy people of Cumbria to heat their homes during the coldest months of the year and save lives as a result.
We would like to eventually roll out our service to other parts of Cumbria initially, and then the wider UK if successful.
