The Background.

I have seen many of my friends raise money for causes close to their heart. For me, although I know some people won’t agree with it, I have always wanted to raise money for the kids at St. Pius X School. Schools have to raise money all the time to be able to survive. It takes a lot of time and effort by many great volunteers and staff. It is never enough. With technology changing all the time, and vital for the future generations, it is hard to keep up. This is my twentieth year working at the school and having seen it from all angles - Mum helper, TA, Dinner Lady, Head of PTA, Governor, HLTA - I know the school quite well.

The Project

This year I have started to develop the use of the school library. We all need to encourage our children to read more. To do that they need to have a space they love to be in. The space needs to be multi-purpose and, at present, we are trying to use old furniture to fit the space. It looks ok, but it does not inspire. I would like to change some of the furniture, decorate, put up engaging displays, buy books suitable for everyone, get the classes to create their own artwork on canvas, make it a place they want to be. If I was able to I would also like to develop the small outside space into a reading garden, a quiet place for those kids that just want to read a book at lunchtime.

The Idea

‘Simple‘, ‘easy’, said my ever-so-helpful family. ‘Jump out of a plane’.

The Plan

So, I said I would jump out of a plane, (I know many of you are jumping up and down at that thought) but it had to be worthwhile. I would do it if I could get sponsored. (I’m sure lot’s of past and present pupils and parents would pay good money to get me to do that). I have thought about this for a number of weeks and have been trying to push myself to commit. By putting it on here and starting the ball rolling I have to do it, I can’t back out once I’m sponsored.

Finally

We all have or will have children, nieces, nephews, granchildren etc and they are all important. This is a very small project but it could help to motivate and inspire children to pick up a book and read. It could give them a welcoming space that they can make their own. I have started to brighten the space with a BFG inspired display with a quote chosen by the children for their space.
