I am only part the way through my first of 3 years in midwifery training and already i know that this is the career i was made for. Being a midwife is a privilege and comes with the reward of being part of a families most special moments and i feel lucky to be able to be heading towards such a dynamic and amazing role for my career. At the end of my 3rd year I will be able to choose where I would like to spend my final month of placement as a student Midwife and after starting my passion for midwifery in Africa and knowing how eye opening that experience was, i would love nothing more than to end my student experience in another amazing country... Vietnam. Going to Vietnam will allow me to truly test my competency as a midwife as well as witness the place which childbearing sits within another culture. For example, woman-centred care is a luxury found only in the wealthiest healthcare systems and something which we take for granted, where as in reality simple things such as privacy and pain relief are things which just cannot be provided in other countries. A midwifery elective in Vietnam is my opportunity to witness care in under-resourced, but fast-paced hospital setting in a developing country and also give something back to them. I hope that whilst i will learn so much off them, i will also be able to pass on my skills and knowledge of practice in the UK to practitioners in Vietnam. Getting to Vietnam and the funding to work out there however is something which I cannot do alone whilst studying at the same time. I am therefore fundraising for this once in a lifetime experience.
