This summer I graduated from University with a BSc Psychology degree. I have always had a keen interest in mental health and now I am wanting to use my personal experience and passion to help others who are struggling. One in four people in the world will be affected by a mental health illness at some point in their lives……but this can be changed.

In April 2019 I have been given the opportunity to spend 4 weeks in Bali on the SLV.global Mental Health Placement. Indonesia is a place where many still view the mentally ill as lacking in faith or being possessed by demons. It’s a place where there are limited resources and very few psychiatrists at hand to help the growing problem of mental health among the population.

During the placement, I will attend talks and training sessions in order to further my own knowledge of mental health. I will then be providing support to individuals of all ages suffering from mental health. I will be running activity sessions at various government initiatives and schools, for children with specific needs as well as community outreach programs designed to keep elderly residents healthy. I will be organising and undertaking therapeutic sessions within a psychiatric facility – challenging me to really think how best to help the individuals at varying stages of recovery.

On the 2nd December this year I will be taking part in a half marathon in Nottingham in order to raise money to go towards the placement fees of £1400. Anyone who knows me will know I can barely run 1k without giving up, so I’m extremely nervous/excited to take on the challenge of running 21kms!
