    Story

    Hola & Hello!

We are El Milagro Project, a social project that uses art and creativity as tools for social and personal change!

We support people with limited economic resources through art, education, health and provide training programs for children, teens, adults and people with disabilities.

Please see our page for more information:

    www.facebook.com/ElMilagroProject

We hope to receive your help with this international fundraising campaign to raise funds to create an art gallery and shop project: Café NUNA (which means SOUL in Quechua, the native language of Peru)

We already have a digital space here:

    www.facebook.com/nunartgalery

Now we’re hoping to have a physical space, and rent it for at least a year so we can do a long-term project in earnest.

Our cultural centre would become a

    • Meeting place and cultural hub Location for social work

    • Location of community workshops

    • Craft Fair

    • Place to support local self-sustainable businesses

The Milagro Project already has an experience organising the exhibition of artist Rachel Burney in 2018, who travelled from Scotland to Cusco for a month to work with us and showcase her art. She’s currently the sole driving force behind helping us our dream and campaign.

Please take a look at some photos of Rachel’s exhibition work!

Upon achieving opening this creative space we could help our paralysed artist friend - Andrés Quispe make his first exhibition with which he will open the NUNA gallery.

Andrés can use it as a workshop, produce and develop his art, then display and sell his work in a store & gallery. NUNA will also receive works by other Special Artists with social responsibility to exhibit and sell their art.

Andrés’s Art can be seen here:

    Andrés Quispe

Andrés Quispe was born in 1989 in Paru Paru. It is a small community of only 450 at highest area of the Pisac district, Calca province, in Cusco, Peru. His mother died when only aged 3, whilst giving birth to 2 brothers, who also died 3 months later, leaving him alone with only his father.

Very hard years ensued and Andre’s father resorted to heavy drinking whilst leaving Andres alone at home and without food for days. Andres grew up in extreme poverty and an unstable family environment. He was forced to work from a young age. After leaving a neighbourhood fiesta aged 10 he started to feel a discomfort across his body. As he lay in a field a complete paralysis swept across his body. With no force to move, it wasn’t until the next day he was found my neighbours. They called his father who immediately took him to the Cusco Hospital.

The worst was confirmed at the hospital: he was not only diagnosed with incurable disease (poliomyelitis) but over time he would have no mobility at all.

After several months hospitalised, he received even more tragic news. His father had died due to sadness and caring for his son. Andrés was left alone in the world without any resources to fight against his illness.

From then on he was staying in several clinics around Cusco. He tried to move to Lima and rent an apartment but it was soon impossible for health and economic reasons, so he returned to Cusco – surviving only through selling craft bracelets in the central market.

Whilst hospitalised, one of the directors offered him a small job. During this time he met Abel, who was with an NGO specialising in treating conditions related to poliomyelitis.

They hung out a while and became friends, until Abel left the NGO to found “El Milagro Project – Arte Para Ayudar” (The Milagro Project – Art to Help.

Here they have been collaborating on a range of positive projects with Andrés and giving him a purpose in life. The current plan is to help Andrés make his first art exhibition in Cusco Peru. This way he’ll be able to cover his basic needs: fix his wheelchair, earn a basic living and look after his health – the most important thing.

As well as organising the art workshop to create art works and canvases, t-shirt designs, having a workplace to explore his creativity – he’ll be opening pathways to develop his artistic career in which he has great potential – as well as helping other disabled artists within his community have a gateway to work. If you want to collaborate in this project, become a volunteer, make a donation or learn more.

    YOU CAN HELP!

Your collaboration will go towards, long term rental fees, materials, brushes, paintings, pictures, paper, cards and shirts printing that Andrés has designed, as well as the whole even production: marketing, design, posters, flyers, invitations, advertising, transportation, food, etc.

Also, with your help, we will paint a mural 10 by 6 meters wide at the gallery façade, and create a mini lodging space for 3 volunteers who wish to live and work with us. Your donation, alongside sales generated from clothing, books, unique art products, art in the gallery/shop, mini-lodging, food and drinks in the cafe, will help us financially to continue growing this unique social project! I offered to set up this page/fundraising project as after being out in Peru working alongside Abel and Andres- I saw how little help there is for disabled people over there without fantastic projects like Abels. This is a life changing project. Can you help me change lives?
