Story
On Fathers day my Dad set out to go on a Charity bike ride, when his hands started to tingle and feel strange, he mentioned it to my mum who said if gets worse they'll go to hospital and by the afternoon it did get worse one of his legs gave way and he fell to the floor and couldn't get up so an ambulance was phoned and he was rushed to hospital.
Whilst at the hospital numorus tests were taken and nothing came back with any results and they had no ideas as to what it was, so they called in a specialist Dr.
By the time the Dr had arrived on the tues my Dad was paraylised from the neck down, the Dr ran more tests then diognosed him with Guillen Barre Syndrome.
Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rare neurological disorder in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks part of its peripheral nervous system—the network of nerves located outside of the brain and spinal cord. GBS can range from a very mild case with brief weakness to nearly devastating paralysis, leaving the person unable to breathe independently. Fortunately, most people eventually recover from even the most severe cases of GBS. After recovery, some people will continue to have some degree of weakness.
Guillain-Barré syndrome can affect anyone. It can strike at any age (although it is more frequent in adults and older people) and both sexes are equally prone to the disorder. GBS is estimated to affect about one person in 100,000 each year.
I am wanting to raise the money to buy him an electric wheel chair so he can get some of his freedom back. As you can imagine this has been devastating for us all and has completely changed my Dads life when he was a very active man.
He is now home after intense treatment and intense physio at various hospitals, but is still bed bound he can move his arms and hands to feed himself but there is nothing below the waist. The freedom to get out wpuld mean so much to him and give home the potential to return to work.
Thank you
