In July 2019, I will be travelling to Fiji to volunteer with the charity Think Pacific. Whilst in Fiji, my team and I will implement educational and sporting initiatives, that will have a long term and sustainable impact on the local community.

What is Think Pacific?

Think Pacific is a small charity, directly partnered with the Fijian government, that works through education and sporting initiatives to improve participation in schools and extra curricular activities, in rural and deprived villages in Fiji. Only 5% of children in Fiji gain an early years education, but Think Pacific projects have increased school attendance by 15%, literacy levels by 40% and participation in sport by 600%! In 2019, Think Pacific's mission aims to deliver 150,000 hours of tuition, coaching and youth activities - my project will help contribute to this aim and support local Fijian communities.

What will I be doing?

For 4 weeks, my team and I will be volunteering in a primary school, developing English and Maths skills, and in the afternoons, we will support sports coaching sessions, as well as run music and craft activities. In addition to this, educational activities for the younger children will include a toothbrush club, aiming to improve dental hygiene in Fiji. As part of the experience, I will be living in a local village with a Fijian family, where I will receive a fully immersive experience of the culture - an experience I will be very lucky to have.

Why Think Pacific?

I am choosing to volunteer with Think Pacific as this fantastic charity ensures all their projects are sustainable, providing long term support for the local Fijian communities, with an focus on training local people. By passing on skills to the local Fijian people, the project will have a sustainable impact on the communities for years to come. In addition, I feel I will personally benefit hugely and learn a lot from this experience, as this experience is a once in a lifetime opportunity and so different from anything I have done previously.
