Story
Destiny Medical Centre is a project that was inspired by a need to provide quality medical care to the children at Kampala Children's Centre (KCC) (a not for profit organisation which is supported by Nations Discipleship Enterprise Network (NDE)). Over the period of only 15 years, KCC has developed from a bare hillside to now providing 11 houses for about 150 children, as well as a kindergarten, primary and secondary school which also serve the local community of about 2000 people.
In 2013 one of the children died from a brain tumour and over the following year two other children died from HIV-related infections. These deaths could have been prevented with more accessible medical care and better education. Therefore the project to build an on-site medical facility, not only for the children but also the surrounding community, became a priority.
In 2015 building of the medical centre started and the building is now nearing completion but funds are still required to complete the building, install solar panels, computers and software as well as the internal fittings and equipment to be able to provide the following services from this single centre:
antenatal care; HIV clinics; paediatric immunisations; family planning; dental care; general outpatient clinics; counselling services; an eye clinic; a minor procedures unit; a ward for the KCC children; daily health education to all the waiting patients
Unusual in its concept, the model for the clinic is to deliver high quality, top end investigative medical services to the private for-profit sector which will create an income base to provide the much-needed but more charitable and not-for-profit services, to people such as those of the surrounding district of Wakiso (number 2 million people).
In addition to supplying medical care, this centre will provide employment to a large number of people from cleaners to those manning each of the clinics and to administrators of the clinic. Training and development will be a focus in order to encourage upskililng and thereby community upliftment.
Not only will the clinic care for people, but for the environment as well:
it will be fully solar powered; Instruments will be sterilise in such a way as to reduce packaging waste; recycling will occur throughout the clinic; run-off and rain water will be collected and used for the toilets
Please join me in raising money to help build a high quality, self-sustaining medical facility which will improve health from people who have minimal access to basic medical care, but will also provide employment, empower people by offering training opportunities and will have a minimal impact on the environment. And if you are able to, please come to the charity quiz and raffle advertised in the cover photo (starts at 7.30 pm).
