This summer, I will be going on an adventure. I will be going to Fiji for a month with the charity Think Pacific (reg. charity 1162190).

Despite, Fiji being known for its sandy beaches and all year tropical weather. If you look past these attractions, you will find that 75% of rural families live in poverty. In addition, only 50% of the rural population have access to clean drinking water and proper sanitation. 

In 2016, Cyclone Winston struck the shore of Fiji. Displacement among the rural population, has meant that their education has suffered. With only under 5% of children in rural areas having access to early year’s education, schools are in poor condition and resources are limited.

Think Pacific aims to tackle this set back by providing high quality education and youth development.

Whilst in Fiji, I will be living with a Fijian family. This will allow me to have a local perspective of Fiji. I will be going to the local school and working on a one-on-one basis with children helping them develop in English and Maths.  Furthermore, I will be leading and participating in extracurricular activities.

Think Pacific is unlike any other international volunteer because it focus solely of one country, Fiji. Having this unitary focus allows them provide in-depth teacher training (academic and extracurricular related) and resources long after I have returned home. Furthermore, Think Pacific is government backed  (e.g. Fijian Ministries of Education, Sports, Youth and Health). This shows that Think Pacific ensures that their affect is long lasting.

Today, I am asking you to making  a donation towards this opportunity. I have always wanted to participate in international volunteering because I believe that it is a great way to learn about a country from a local perspective, while helping to improve the circumstances of an individual.

Your donation will go towards my project fee which is equivalent to £1,100. The project fees are broken down as followed:

·        35% = £385 – Volunteer related cost.

·         33% = £363 – Charity and sustainability.

·         17% = £187 – Project operations, support and logistics.

·         7% = £77 – UK volunteer support.

·         5% = £55 – Project planning and evaluation.

·         2% = £22 – Promotion.

·         1% = £11 – Re-investment.

The remainder will go to my flight cost, which will be my return flight to Nadi, Fiji.
