Story
In late June this year I will be travelling to a remote part of Fiji, to volunteer with the organisation Think Pacific for a month. Think Pacific is backed by the Fijian government, and aims to improve the education system especially to young children through the help of volunteers, this is particularly crucial as 75% of children in rural Fiji live in poverty, the hope is to decrease that. Since Think Pacific first began it's mission in the early 2000's there has been a 15% increase in school attendance in the remote areas of Fiji, with over 10,000 Fijian children being supported through the organisation.
The aim of the trip is to educate not only the children of the remote village in literacy and numeracy, but also their teachers so that the benefits can continue after our expedition. Education is sparse in rural areas and lacks basic amenities, with only 5% of children having access to early years schooling. With the help of volunteers Think Pacific have already made a huge positive impact on the access to education for local Fijians especially after the natural disaster of Cyclone Winston in 2016, which damaged over 200 schools.
The expedition is not solely focussed around education, and throughout the month I am there the afternoons will be spent carrying out non-curricular activities with the children such as sport, drama, and art, thus aiming to increase the livelihood of the people in such rural areas.
I will being fully immersing myself into the Fijian culture not only through educating the children in the local schools, but also by living in a Fijian family home, adapting to their way of life through their home cooking to the cultural traditions.
Any donations will be hugely appreciated, thank you.
