Story
Grey College Charity Fashion Show 2019 is raising funds for two charities: The Stephen Gartland Foundation and Heads Up Durham. Any donations are most welcome!
Heads Up are the Durham branch of Student Minds – the UK’s student mental health charity. University is a massive lifestyle change for many young people and this leads to roughly 1/3 of students reporting psychological distress during their time at uni.
Student Minds aim to develop ways of improving mental health by working with professionals, students and academics. One of these developments have been the creation of Peer Support Groups. With the help of the fashion show, Heads Up Durham will be able to continue paying for the training of peer facilitators to deliver these student-led groups which have already proven to be popular within the student population.
The Stephen Gartland Foundation was put together in memory of Brad’s dad Stephen. Stephen took his own life in August 2016 after a long battle with depression. He was such a happy, generous and outgoing man and for him to take his own life shows how powerful depression can be.
The foundation raises awareness regarding mental health and suicide and aims to support various mental health charities such as the #itsokaytotalk campaign.
Stephen loved rugby which he played and coached for many years. However, there is a stigma related to mental health in especially within rugby and with men in general. Therefore, the foundation has a passion to educate sports clubs about the value of opening up and talking about how you feel.
