Story
Did you know that much of Fiji's marine environment remains unknown?
I'm Gemma and I am currently in my last year of sixth form and have just processed my university applications. This project will really strengthen my field of knowledge for when I go to University to study Marine Biology and Ocean Science. As well as this, the project is close to my heart with a life spent in the ocean: sailing, swimming and diving, I have come to truly respect the intrinsic value of the sea and believe everyone should do their absolute best to conserve all life below the surface.
This project aims to better understand the marine resources of the island of Bequa and aims to provide teaching and training to enable local communities to make informed decisions regarding the management of their coastal ecosystems. To do this, I will be conduct scientific baseline data surveys of reef areas, contributing to a long-term data set where patterns of resource use can be identified and work with local communities can begin to build awareness of the value and vulnerability of their marine environment.
So why do I want to go all the way to Fiji? Having completed research into this project, and others, I want to be a part of this 9-week program because it is an example to the world of how artificial technology and conservation is done right. Through my experience, I will spread their message further and show people that there are others out there working to restore the destruction of the past, whilst mapping out the future. That’s the kind of world I want to be a part of.
In order to be able to pursue this dream project I really do need as much help as possible. If this is a project you deem worthy, please donate as much or as little as possible to help me.
Thank you,
Gemma

5 years agoUnfortunately, due to Foreign Office advice, I am no longer able to travel to the Tropical Research and Conservation Center in Malaysia. However, I have been fortunate enough to locate a similar project in a safer country to help conserve marine and costal biodiversity. I am now travelling to Fiji. If you feel that this is not something you want to support please let me know and I will organise a refund. I hope you will agree that this remains a very important proect and will still help me to get there. Thanks, Gem
