    Story

On 8th April 2019 my simply amazing mother passed away in SWAH Coronary Care Unit.

Mummy was admitted to SWAH on the 9th February with what we believed was a recurring chest infection. However on Friday 1st March a consultant cardiologist confirmed that she was in fact suffering from endocarditis - two mechanical heart valves which had been fitted in 2011 were severely infected, and she was septic.

The prognosis was extremely bleak, with surgery not an option. However the cardiologist immediately moved her to the Coronary Care unit, where over that weekend all available treatment options were exhausted. Against all odds, mum made it to Monday, when the medics admitted they had no plan in place as they were not expecting her to still be with them at that stage.

In fact she was there for another five roller-coaster weeks, charged with emotion as we endured the most turbulent time that any of us could ever imagine.

During this time Dad and myself stayed round the clock such was the fine balance between life and death, knowing that at any point things could take a turn for the worse. My dad slept in family room while I stayed next to mum on a reclining heart failure chair.

It would be impossible to ever fully explain the care, love and support given not only to mum but also to dad, myself and the rest of the wider family from all the staff on the ward. We will be forever indebted to them and words alone would never be enough to thank them for what they did.

Before mum passed away, we had agreed and promised her that we would ‘give something back’ in her memory to go some way to show our deep appreciation. It is for that reason that we are having a sponsored run/walk and coffee afternoon on Saturday 21st September, more details on which will follow over next few weeks.

We have chosen activities which will be of a broad appeal, and we hope that as many local people as possible; neighbours, family, friends and others, will join with us to help raise funds for these extremely worthy causes, and help us to follow through on that all-important promise we made to ‘give something back’ to those who were there for mum when we needed them most.
