    Story

Mia is a woman of colour who explores gender and sexuality through different mediums. Her work is aimed at women everywhere who share a common story. Through her work she explores masculinity in the way she presents herself, interacts with other people and the sexual nature of female masculinity in a lesbian relationship. As a woman of colour Mia's story is not uncommon but seldom heard.

Mia has a rich history of performance work. Using poetry, movement, film, storytelling and music, she draws us a fascinating picture of a life beyond the typical.

My current work and future work will focus on women. I’m passionate about showing how multidimensional we are, especially as a gay identifying woman of colour. I know how stereotypes constantly impact the way we are viewed and perceived. It’s about smashing the stereotypes and expressing the strength in our womanhood.

    Here I am a child.

    4 or 5.

Wearing a smile that was probably instigated by my mum with “cheese”.

I no longer eat cheese, did last night though on chips.

    Regret.

    I chose this outfit,

Believe me I CHOSE this outfit.

    Ownership.

Little did I know that these little baggy denim shorts,

Unfitting white printed tee and footwear that didn’t resemble my mums favourable floral sandal would later create ripples in the minds of strangers and loved ones who would internally and externally say.

“She’s going to be a lesbian”

    #pinklemonade by Mia Johnson

Mia's new project Pink Lemonade has already been chosen by the one of the foremost black theatre companies in Britain, Talawa, as part of their Studio Firsts programme.

With your help she can develop this project further and has been offered an incredible opportunity to attend an international residential feminist writing conference in Toronto.

Let's give Mia the opportunity to express her art and speak for thousands of unheard voices across humanity. We are raising funds for developing Pink Lemonade the show exploring the masculine inside the feminine.
