Dementia Friendly Rothwell is the first dementia friendly community in Leeds.We have many groups for those affected by dementia,including Tea Cosy Memory Cafe,and also a number of business's who have a basic knowledge of dementia so that they can help those affected,live an independent life and continue to be a part of the community,be enabling them to go shopping,go to the bank,cafes and pubs,in the knowledge that there is a community that cares.A natural progression was to include the park.An area has been offered to be used as a dementia friendly garden,within the local park.This will incorporate special seating,double and single,with arm rests and pull ups.Raised planting areas to enable blocks of vibrant colour together with grasses and bamboos to offer the sounds in the breeze.The walk through will be a simple loop,with access to all areas.There is also an aviary,and there will be designated dementia friendly parking places. Once completed it is envisaged that dementia walks will be incorporated including the local cafe,which is also a dementia friendly business,plus other events for those affected by dementia.It is well documented that sunlight (vitamin D),fresh air and simple exercise are beneficial for those with dementia,this garden will help not only through these aspects,but also by socialisation and inclusion,which in turn will avoid withdrawal and isolation for those affected,and of course carers and families.
