My story
My campaign focusses on a single event, the annual London-to-Brighton Bike Ride, to be held on Sunday 17th June 2012.
I will be joined by Curriers Emily James and David Moss plus Emily's husband Ross James for this 56-mile ride from Clapham Common to the seafront in my home town of Brighton. The Bike Ride is organised by the British Heart Foundation and a proportion of the money that I collect will go to that major charity. However, the real object of my appeal is the Nia Project in Hackney, which provides a safe and supportive environment for women and children who are escaping physical, sexual and emotional abuse. At least 1 in 4 women experience domestic violence in their lifetime and between 1 in 8 and 1 in 10 women experience it annually. Less than half of all incidents are reported to the police and a domestic violence incident happens every 6-20 seconds in the UK. The vast majority of the victims of domestic violence are women and children, and women are also considerably more likely to experience repeated and severe forms of violence and sexual abuse, regardless of ethnicity, religion, class or age. You can read more about this small but hugely deserving charity at www.niaproject.info
