My story

Dear all,

I like a challenge and decided after completing a few triathlons that an Ironman would be a good one for me.  The secret is that whilst the distances involved are considerable (2.4 mile swim, 112 miles bike, 26.2 mile run), the training required is much more my kind of pace and I was impressed to learn that eating fruit cake during the race is a significant contributor to success.

As most of you will know, my stepson Louie has Crohn's disease and has proven quite the inspiration to complete this event.  After seeing how Louie coped with some extremely unpleasant times resulting in operations, severe discomfort and daily treatment without breaking stride or making a fuss - I hardly feel in a position to moan when I've chosen to go out for a swim, bike ride or run (jog).  Whilst Crohn's never goes away Louie is currently doing extremely well and starts Uni this year.

As many as 2% of people in the UK are thought to suffer with Crohns.  Treatment and research is improving but very limited - I was surprised how many times I heard "let's try this and see" whilst Louie was suffering over the years.

This event is a personal crusade but I would be thrilled if it afforded an opportunity to raise funds to improve the diagnosis and quality of treatment that people with Louie's condition receive.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: The National Association for Colitis and Crohn's Disease - NACC gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

Well done Daniel - what an amazing achievement - looking forward to catching for few beers soon. Up the hammers Donation by Ross Fentiman 07/07/09
