Story
As most of you know, I am currently a final year medical student at the University of Leicester. Myself and my good friend are organising a volunteer mission to the Cameroon with the organisation Child Advocacy International (CAI) to work in an HIV paediatric clinic this summer starting on 28th july 2008.
As part of the placement we will be working in a hospital in Bamenda, capital of the North West province of Cameroon, helping the doctors and nurses care for children who are often very sick by the time they seek medical attention. In addition to this, we will be attached to the neonatal unit at the hospital which at the moment is over-crowded with inadequate hand washing facilities.
One of the main aims of the project is regarding the Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of the HIV virus. We will have the opportunity to learn how this process works to such that we can assist the understaffed 3 nurse team. In addition to this there is the opportunity to work in a support group for HIV +ve mothers. Having read testimonials and reports, the mothers find the emotional and practical support they receive very helpful, as coping with their own illness and the anxiety about their baby is hard.
African children are at great risk of acquiring Burkitt's lymphoma, a malignant tumour which is always fatal if left untreated. There is a great need for chemotherapy which your money can provide.
We have contacted a medical organisation who provide doctors travelling to the third word with doctor's travel packs. These are a pre-packed assortment of essential medicines and medical supplies, which are sold at £370 but are worth over £2800. this is where some of your money will go.
The packs include antibiotics, antimalarials, antifungals, antimalarials, vitamins analgesics and other appropriate drugs for the region. The drugs would be extremely useful and we would be able to take the 60Kg of medicines with us on the plane free of charge because it is charitable.
Whilst I appreciate that you are getting this all very last moment, I am writing to extend an invitation to you, if you would be willing, to donate towards or sponsor my trip to Bamenda. I would greatly appreciate your help and consideration in this matter.
Many thanks for your interest and time.
