Low points

1.  The 4 mile ascent on the A635 from Greenfield to Saddleworth Moor in fog and rain and being passed by two fit young bucks who reminded me that it was a very steep hill.

2. Getting lost in Hull just 3 miles from the finish which cost me 30 mins.

High points

1, The kindness of Peter Devlin in Liverpool who showed me how to get to Bootle!

2. The lady in Jenny's Cafe Ashton who thought I was riding for Children in Need and gave me a fiver (She did insist that I keep it after I explained!)

3. Jenny, for refusing to accept payment for the tea and toast.

4. The exhilarating descent from Saddleworth down to Holmfirth.

5. Best of all was the extraordinary reception from Fr. Colm Kelly, Port Chaplain Anne McLaren, the Ship Visitors and most of all, the seafarers who were at the Hull Centre last night.  The effort was worth it for that alone.

To all who have made such incredible donations so far, you have exceeded all expectations.  Thanks so much. To those who might be reading this,  it isn't too late and AOS really will appreciate your support.

25th October 08

Last week, our Chairman, Eamonn Delaney, led a troop of AOS supporters on an epic 100k “Sea to Sea Trek” from the Mediterranean to Galilee in support of seafarers.  Efforts like this demonstrate the concern of individuals for the welfare of seafarers and of the need to support Chaplains and other AOS volunteers who visit ships.

We Catholics are good at guilt and since I didn’t join the trek, now feel that as an AOS trustee, some personal effort might be in order!  Accordingly, I have decided to try and maintain the momentum of the Sea to Sea Trekkers with a UK “UK Sea to Sea Bike Ride” to assist the cause.

My ride from Liverpool to Hull will take place on 14th Nov, 2008.  To make it a real challenge, I am aiming to complete the 150 miles within a day, much of it during the hours of darkness.  This won’t be an easy ride, but I do have sufficient motivation and concern for the plight of our seafarers to give it my best shot.

The single goal of this ride is to raise a whopping £10,000, part of which will be used to pay for an important fund raising event that will take place in December and in turn, hopefully result in financial support from Shipping Companies and others who have shipping interests.

AOS is totally reliant on voluntary contributions and I am sorry if it seems like only yesterday that John Hughes and I were looking for your support for our Land’s End to John O’Groats ride last year.  Appeals of this nature are therefore unavoidable.

Donating through Justgiving is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me:  Apostleship Of The Sea will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

Your support is very much appreciated - thanks

David Savage
