My story

Its done!!!  The race was good fun until the last 7miles.  I managed @3.26mins and am chuffed and chaffed. Thanks for all your well wishes, sponsorship and ideas for fund raising. (Special thanks to Andrew Thorne, Elen Thorne, Ed , Lesley, Clare and Jenny for your on the spot encouragement and revitalising)  We will try to collate the sponsorship and announce the total soon, if we are not at the target I think we are over £5,000.  So who's going to take up the challenge now, lets get another £10,000?!  PS;  you can still give on line for the next few weeks.

Dave Thorne was a qualified and experienced teacher at Woodlands Outdoor Education Centre where he worked for nearly 20 years. Sadly, he died in a canoeing accident whilst on holiday in the Lake District in January 2007.

The Dave Thorne Bursary is for young people in Oxfordshire who would like to attend its Outdoor Education Centres but due to financial constraints are unable to do so.  This bursary is being set up, under the auspice’s of the Oxfordshire Outdoor Learning trust, by family and friends to honour his commitment to the development of young people and the enjoyment of the outdoors.

Pupils who attend outdoor education courses gain skills like; climbing or navigation whilst learning how to work safely with others and overcome challenges.  For some it can be a crucial week in their development, many claim it is the best week of their lives.

Dave overcame many challenges in his lifetime and was an inspiration to children and staff alike. As a tribute to him I would ask you to sponsor my participation in the London Marathon and support The Dave Thorne Bursary.

Thanks, Dave Barber
